Description:
- The Junior Counselor role at the Science Center of Iowa (SCI) is a vital role to the experience of the campers, providing a fun, safe and educationally-effective learning environment. Jr. Counselors will act as role models for campers, engaging and inspiring them along their journey of lifelong science learning. Taking advantage of the opportunities for personal growth as a developing leader in our community.
Duties:
- Assist Camp Educators in facilitating curriculum and activities in the daily schedule
- Support Camp Educators with sorting, gathering and doing inventory of necessary supplies
- Serve as support during field trips and transition periods of camp, keeping campers respectful, quiet and on time in their daily schedule
- Responsible for providing care and well-being of campers while participating in programs
Qualifications:
- High school student (Must be at least 14 year-old)
- Enjoy working with children ages 4-14 in a learning environment
- Good communication skills and friendly, outgoing personality
- Comfortable approaching participants and initiating conversation
- Punctuality and dependability are key
Expectations:
- Understand and support the purpose, structure and policies of the SCI
- Offer the use of your skills or experience
- Conduct yourself in accordance with the standards of conduct and ethics of SCI
- Complete any orientation or on-the-job training required
- Be flexible in accepting assignments, perform assigned responsibilities willingly and courteously to the best of your ability and accept the guidance of the Volunteer Manager
- Comply with the time and dress requirements of the SCI
- Obey all security and safety rules of the Science Center of Iowa
- Respect the confidentiality of sensitive information
- Provide timely notification of absence or tardiness to the Volunteer Manager
- Serve as a goodwill ambassador of the SCI to the community
Working Hours:
- Primarily Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.
- There will be four hours of training on May 9, 2026.
