The need for volunteer tutors is great. The wait list of adults waiting for tutors is large and growing. WE NEED VOLUNTEER TUTORS!
This 10-hour training introduces volunteers to the causes of reading failure and how to structure lessons with multisensory materials to teach adults to read. You will discover how much you take for granted that a struggling reader must learn step-by-step. As a tutor/mentor you have the opportunity to assist adults in learning literacy skills that make them more functional and independent in their daily lives.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and be able to volunteer for at least 9 to 12 months. Skills needed:
• Willingness to learn within a given structure
• Able to work and communicate effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds
• No prior teaching experience required
The Volunteer Tutor Training is 1 1/2 days, Friday evening, 5-8 pm and Saturday, 9 am - 3:30 pm
Trainings occur every 3 months: Jan., April, June, Sept.
