Who We Are

First established in 1993 as the Des Moines Parks and Recreation Foundation, the Friends of Des Moines Parks mission is to preserve, protect, improve and promote the use of Des Moines’ parks, greenways and recreational programs for the benefit of all neighborhoods, residents and visitors. The Friends prioritize equitable recreational access to less fortunate families, supporting participation in youth sports programs, swim lessons and community events regardless of their financial position.

What We Do

The Friends of Des Moines Parks is a nonprofit 501c3 that secures philanthropic dollars from grants, private donors, event sponsors and corporate partners to support our 76 parks, 82 miles of trails, community recreation centers and gardens, aquatic facilities and various programs that connect residents to one-another, their neighborhoods and their city. The Friends have extended critical support for system-wide park projects including: upgrading or replacing park amenities like playgrounds and shelters, funding trail improvements, purchasing needed equipment and supporting beautification efforts and sustainability measures.
