During the READ to SUCCEED project, volunteers will read a book with a third-grader. Afterwards, they’ll complete fun literacy activities that complement the book which explores the themes of cultural awareness, diversity, gratitude, and community support.
The event will take place at schools in Des Moines, Urbandale and West Des Moines where reading proficiency is particularly low. Kids who don’t read proficiently by the end of third grade are 4 times more likely to drop out before graduating high school.
Building a child’s literacy skills and inspiring their interest in reading can make a huge difference for their future success in school and in life.
Additional Notes: Project team leaders will receive their school and classroom assignment from United Way. The school specific information is not available until closer to September 9. By registering with this event, volunteers understand and agree that their names will be passed on to the schools for a background check, including but not limited to, child and dependent abuse. Some schools may require a pre-check and will be asked to share their DOB. Volunteers may also be asked to provide a valid photo ID upon arrival at the school.
