The Des Moines Art Center hosts a variety of free, public-facing events throughout the year — from family days and community celebrations to hands-on art activities and performances. These events are designed to welcome visitors of all ages and backgrounds and to make the museum feel accessible, creative, and alive.

We’re looking for event-based volunteers who want to support these experiences on an occasional basis, without a long-term or weekly commitment.

Event volunteers play an important role in creating a warm, organized, and welcoming environment for visitors. Depending on the event and your interests, volunteers may:

Greet and orient visitors as they arrive

Assist with hands-on art activities (no art experience required)

Support storytimes, performances, or interactive programs

Help visitors navigate the building and event schedule

Encourage participation and answer basic questions

Assist with light setup or cleanup before or after events

Volunteers always work alongside staff and are given clear instructions and support.

Event-based: volunteer for one event or multiple events, as your schedule allows

Typical shifts range from 2–4 hours, often on weekends

No ongoing or weekly commitment required

This role is ideal for people who want flexibility, are new to volunteering, or prefer short-term opportunities.

Able to work in lively, sometimes busy environments

At least 14 year-old

No prior museum or teaching experience required

Volunteers are needed to organize our donation area and do light cleaning in our shared living spaces (living room, dining room, and kitchen). ​Volunteers would be organizing clothing, personals/toiletries, feminine hygiene products, diapers, cleaning products, school supplies, food items, and much more. We provide basic necessities every month for up to the 77 families staying in New Directions Shelter, The Home Connection, and our other housing programs.​

​This is a great project for a single person to work on, or you can sign up to bring a group (up to 10 people at a time). Volunteers should be 12 and older. Youth 14 years of age and younger should have an adult on site with them while volunteering.

The DMARC Food Pantry at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to assist clients with food orders, stock shelves, rotate inventory, package personal care items and accept donations. Volunteers will help families shop to meet their food and personal care needs. Some lifting is required. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, Monday through Friday as well as Tuesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Shifts are in two to three hour increments. Volunteers may either commit to one shift per week, or volunteer intermittently as a sub. The Clothing Closet at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to accept, sort and straighten donations of clothing, shoes, toys, towels, linens, blankets, home decor and housewares. Volunteers will also assist clients as needed and keep the room neat and organized. Morning and afternoon shifts available, Monday through Friday. Shifts are in two to three hour increments. Volunteers may commit to a regular weekly shift, or volunteer on an intermittent basi.  Opportunities also available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Some lifting is required. The Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm is a 3,000 square foot indoor farm capable of producing 20,000 pounds of leafy greens a year. Our farm provides some of our most at risk populations in the metro a source of fresh, healthy greens year-round. We also provide greens to other WesleyLife and local communities.

Are you looking for a great team-building volunteer opportunity for your work group/department, school team or group, church group, social club, or friend group? If so, we invite you to learn, work and have some fun together in the Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm! Individual volunteers are also greatly appreciated!

Training will be provided for every task. We do not require a background in gardening or farming, and only ask that you have an open mind and drive to help feed others. Come help us grow nutrition for those who need it most.

Volunteering at the Meals on Wheels hydroponic farm only takes place Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  

Every weekday, Wesley Life Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers nearly 2,000 hot, nutritious lunches to homebound older adults, veterans, and people living with disabilities. Our volunteers support this mission by delivering meals directly to those in need, while taking a moment to check in with our participants to make sure they are safe and well.    

In 2025, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels delivered 416,764 hot meals to older adults, veterans, and people living with physical and mental disabilities. We know that 91% of our clients report eating healthier, and 94% of our clients are able to stay independent in their own homes thanks in part to Meals on Wheels.

National Nonprofit Day: Celebrating the Power of Service

Join Meals from the Heartland and fellow nonprofit organizations for a special National Nonprofit Day packaging event at the Patty Cownie Packaging Center. This gathering brings together nonprofit leaders, volunteers, and community partners for a shared day of service, connection, and impact.

While our missions may look different, we share a common purpose: caring for people and strengthening our communities. Together, we will assemble nutritious, nonperishable, and culturally adaptable meals that provide nourishment and hope to children and families experiencing food insecurity locally and around the world.

Every meal assembled represents compassion in action. It can support a child ready to learn, provide comfort to families recovering after natural disasters, bring stability to communities facing hardship, and remind people that they are not alone.

This event is more than packing meals. It is an opportunity to lead with heart, serve with purpose, and create meaningful impact alongside organizations dedicated to making a difference.

Come help play with and watch over the kiddos who come to our Pow Wow! The Children's area is a fun place where children can participate in crafts led by our volunteers. If you have children yourself, you are more than welcome to bring them with you!

Volunteers in this area will be needed for 6-hour shifts on September 12 and the 13th.

West Des Moines Human Services is seeking volunteers for its Food Rescue Program.  This opportunity is available weekdays at West Des Moines Human Services.  Volunteers help with sorting and dating food items.  Shifts are approximately two hours in length.  Some lifting involved (up to 25 lbs). West Des Moines Human Services is in need of a driver for their food rescue program on Wednesday or Friday mornings from approximately 9 am to noon.  This opportunity involves driving a sprinter van to various locations in West Des Moines and picking up food, and then returning to WDM Human Services to unload it.  Some lifting is required. The Pet Project helps keep pets with their families and out of shelters through proactive programming. 

We are looking for someone with great organizational skills who would like to join our active all-volunteer board. The position includes coordinating deliveries of donations, keeping the pantry shelves organized to ensure we use the food with the closest expiration date first, and determining what food type is critical to obtain. The role would partner closely with the Inventory Manager position.

Our organization does not require a financial commitment to join the board, but we actively participate in the operation and serving our clients. We ask that members support our activities and provide a level of donation they are comfortable with.

Commitment would be to attend one-hour board meeting monthly and work a pantry shift on Saturday each month (as needed). The inventory management support role will collaborate with the inventory manager. This may include participating in or coordinating inventory counts, ordering product and supplies, and managing deliveries of large donations.

We are looking for someone with great personal skills who would like to join our event committee, focused on preparing and coordinating activities, fundraising, and raising awareness of our organization and the services we provide.

We are looking for someone with experience managing social media accounts and updating a website who would like to join our organization as a volunteer! Our current social media manager needs some help to be able to accomplish everything we want to do. The common actives include creating posts, managing our social media account, and updating our website as needed.

Additionally, we would like to update and create branded content and packages for community actions.

Commitment would be to attend one-hour board meeting monthly and work a pantry shift on Saturday each month (as needed). This position is responsible for fostering long-term relationships with donors to increase retention and secure funding. They manage initiatives such as donor recognition programs, personalized communication, and impact reporting, while also identifying, cultivating, and soliciting potential supporters to achieve organizational fundraising goals. They will partner closely with the social media chair and event committee.

No family should have to give up their pet because they can’t afford its food. You can help these families and their pets by lending a hand in our pet pantry on Saturdays. Be there to greet clients and fill their monthly food order at our warehouse or assist with packing Animeals – our partnership with Meals on Wheels. We would love to have a group of volunteers come in to clean windows, do paint touch-ups, and launder all the bean bag covers in our sensory room!  It's not heavy work, and we think it would make such a difference.  

Help us feed our amazing volunteers and join in on the meal yourself! Every day of the Pow Wow, we feed our volunteers as a thank you for their hard work. It is of special importance to us at Pow Wow that our elders are attended to and have everything that they need, such as snacks and water. So, if you like cooking and working with the elderly, this is a good role for you!

Are you a neat freak who takes pride in cleanliness and keeping a tidy and comfortable place? If so, we could use your help on our Sanitation Team!

We are looking for people to volunteer to check the bathrooms every hour on the hour to make sure they are tidy and well equipped with toilet paper in all the stalls. This team will also need to check the grounds to make sure trash is in the bins. When the bins are full, volunteers will need to make sure that the trash is pulled and a new bag is put in.

Volunteers in this area will be needed for 4-hour shifts on September 11, 12, and the 13th.

We will need help setting up our wonderful event! If you are a strong and organized person who follows orders very well, this is the job for you!

First, we will be needing help with loading the trailer up from the storage unit into trailers. The location will be in Woodward, IA. 

Then, once trailers get out to the Powwow Grounds at Jester Park, we need help with unloading trailers and putting stuff in the areas it will go. This will take place on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Tuesday, September 8, - September 11, volunteers will help with setting up Tipis, canopies, chairs, a Mc stand, kitchen, kids’ area, info tent, and merchandise tent.

We will need help tearing down our wonderful event! If you are a strong and organized person who follows orders very well, this is the job for you!

Running a school supply drive helps level the playing field for children in need, eases the financial burden on low-income families, and saves educators from spending out-of-pocket. By ensuring every student has the tools they need to learn, you empower them with confidence and foster a positive, distraction-free classroom environment. 

Middle school is when supply lists grow and item costs escalate. This current list is from Des Moines Public Schools.

There is a never-ending need for these supplies, so set a goal that seems reasonable for your team.

Help remove one of the biggest barriers to success by providing reliable transportation for residents. Whether it's getting to work, church, appointments, or other important commitments, your willingness to give a ride helps residents stay on track and continue moving forward in their recovery journey.

EveryStep is looking for volunteers to help maintain our outdoor space. 

Help with yardwork, weeding, trimming hedges, and other yard tasks. Tools would be provided to complete the task.

Provide as much or as little time as you would. You can provide 1-2 hours a week, 1-2 hours every other week, 1-2 hours a month, or even provide this service once.

Amanda the Panda seeks Group Facilitators to help fulfill its mission of providing hope and healing to individuals and families who have experienced the death of a loved one. With the goal of promoting peer support and connectivity, our Braving Grief support groups work to recognize how grief affects our minds and our bodies. Our Braving Grief series includes specific groups like Traumatic Loss,  Little Footprints: Perinatal and Infant Loss, and Youth groups. Each activity helps participants identify and accept grief emotions like anger and guilt, learn healthy coping skills, and create rituals to honor loved ones who have died.

Join us and help serve dinner to our Braving Grief Support Group participants at Amanda the Panda. Volunteers will have an opportunity to do light meal preparation and setup, help serve the meal, and clean up after the meal.

Our groups take place on Monday evenings from 6pm-7:30pm and Kitchen Helpers are helping us out from 5:00pm-7:00pm.

Help represent EveryStep in the community by being our mascot, Amanda, at schools and other functions!

Volunteer will dress up in our Amanda the Panda costume and provide support for attendees at events. The volunteer should be able to respond appropriately at events (being quiet when necessary, or excited and waving at parades), represent the personality of Amanda, and the demeanor of the organization in public.

Volunteers should be friendly, comfortable around children and grieving families, and comfortable working indoors or outdoors in a costume covering head to feet.

The Childcare Helper role offers the opportunity to connect, supervise, and provide childcare in our play area or outside in our courtyard while their caregivers are in group. Kiddos are under the age of 5 and toys and activities are provided. 

Groups are held in 6-week sessions on Monday evenings, and volunteers could choose to help out with 1 or multiple weeks. Dinner is also provided each week. 

Everybody Wins! Iowa (EWI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring children’s success in school and life through weekly one-to-one read-aloud experiences with caring adults.

EWI is seeking Board Members who will serve a minimum three (3) year term and assist EWI to achieve its mission to increase children’s success in school and in life through reading and mentoring experiences with caring volunteers. Terms are eligible for renewal to a maximum of three (3) consecutive terms. The Board meets every other month (July, September, November, January, March, and May) on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 PM. All Board Members are expected to participate in Committee activities and attend Committee meetings. Current committees include Public Relations and Resource Development. Dallas County is seeking a volunteer to fill a vacancy on the Dallas County Board of Health. This position oversees administration of the Dallas County Health Department. Volunteers with a passion for public health and a comfort level with governmental budgets or finance are especially welcomed.

Help create connection, joy, and community for women rebuilding their lives at The Beacon. Saturday Night Socials focus on social wellness and provide a safe, fun environment where women can relax, connect, and try something new.

The Adult Literacy Center is celebrating 50 years of service to the community! Join 1000s of volunteers who, over the years, have invested 1-2 hours a week to meet one-to-one with an adult who needs to learn to read, write, and speak better. Become a part of the transformative learning experience as adults gain skills, confidence, and competence.

Adults enroll in the DMACC Adult Literacy Center to become more independent in the world of words, to get a better job, earn a high school diploma, and speak and understand English better. Volunteers meet with their assigned student at the DMACC Urban Campus or at an area library. 

No prior teaching experience is necessary. Come with a desire to learn and make a direct and personal investment in an adult learner's life (and in their family's life). You will receive information and materials to assist with tutoring your adult learner.

Attend an upcoming  1 1/2 hour Literacy Coach orientation.  Orientations are held monthly.

Overview:

We’re seeking skilled and passionate photographers and videographers to help capture the impact of our Open Books mental health awareness campaign. This pro bono role allows you to use your creative talents to tell meaningful stories, highlight campaign events, and bring visibility to mental health in our community.

Responsibilities:

- Capture high-quality photos and/or video footage of the quarterly events, with a specific focus on capturing the storytelling portion of the evening.

- Provide raw footage or edited assets (if you want!) for use in social media, newsletters, and campaign materials.

- Respect participant privacy and obtain consent for media use when necessary.

Qualifications:

Experience in photography and/or videography, including editing and post-production (optional).

Professionalism, reliability, and comfort working in dynamic, community-focused event settings.

Ability to work respectfully with diverse participants, including individuals impacted by mental health conditions.

Access to your own equipment (camera, lenses, lighting, etc.).

Time Commitment:

Approximately 1.5 hours per event, 4 times per year.

Purpose

Help make our studio tools more accessible by creating clear, easy-to-follow instructional resources for Momentum artists. In this role, you’ll demonstrate how to use studio equipment—such as 3D printers, sewing machines, Cricut machines, and more—while capturing both video and step-by-step written guides that artists can reference independently. Your work will support skill-building, confidence, and safe use of equipment across the studio.

General Expectations

As a volunteer, you are expected to:

- Learn and demonstrate proper use of studio equipment, including safety considerations.

- Create clear, step-by-step instructional guides to accompany video content.

- Capture video demonstrations that align with written instructions for ease of use.Use platforms such as Scribe, Whale, or similar to document processes.

- Take an iterative approach—testing instructions and refining based on feedback.

- Engage with artists to understand where confusion may occur and adjust accordingly.

- Ensure instructions are accessible and easy to follow for a range of skill levels.

- Communicate with staff regarding priorities, equipment use, and documentation needs.

- Represent Momentum’s mission and values in a positive and professional manner.

Time Commitment

This is a flexible, project-based role. Volunteers may focus on documenting one piece of equipment or multiple tools over time. Scheduling will be coordinated with staff based on studio availability and project needs.

About Community Support Advocates:

Community Support Advocates is a 501c3 mission-driven nonprofit serving individuals with mental health diagnoses and disabilities through innovative programming, advocacy, and the arts.  We’re looking for a detail-oriented and motivated Fundraising & Research Intern to support our development team. This unpaid internship offers hands-on experience in nonprofit fundraising, prospect research, and donor data management. The Fundraising & Research Intern will report directly to the Director of Development.

Key Responsibilities:

- Research individual donors, grant opportunities, corporate giving programs, and foundations.

- Compile, analyze, and organize donor and prospect lists.

- Systematize donor outreach protocols.

- Assist with light database management and data entry.

- Help identify key funding strategies and giving priorities.

- Provide general administrative support related to fundraising projects and events.

Ideal Candidate:

- Strong research, analytical, and organizational skills.

DEITY Fastpitch is looking for current and former softball coaches and players to conduct and/or assist with DEITY FP camps and programs. This opportunity is well-suited towards those who played at the High School and college level and/or has significant coaching experience and has a desire to stay connected, give back, and help grow the numbers, quality, and inclusiveness of softball.

SUMMARY: DEITY Fastpitch volunteer coaches will aid in the organization’s mission to introduce, teach and promote softball at an early age to girls from underrepresented and under-resourced communities, with the goal of the participating players taking advantage of the interpersonal, health, and educational opportunities the sport has to offer. Volunteer coaches will collaborate with board leadership, key volunteers, and local players to conduct and/or assist with DEITY FP camps, lessons, and programs. For high school volunteers, volunteering with DEITY FP can help with Silver Chord hours.

As a volunteer coach with DEITY FP, you will have the ability to pass along your affinity for the game of softball to a new generation of players and families. Programming will cover mostly elementary and middle school but eventually include high school participants. This will allow for a diversity of volunteer experience. Volunteer coaches may be asked to assist with on-site (indoor or outdoor) event set-up and administration.

As a CASA volunteer, you will be empowered by the courts to help make a child’s dream of a forever home a reality. You will be the one consistent adult in these children’s lives, fighting for and protecting their right to be treated with the dignity and respect that every child deserves. You will not only bring positive change to the lives of these vulnerable children, but also their children and generations to come. And in doing so, you will enrich your life as well.

CASA volunteers come from all walks of life.  No special experience is required. At CASA we offer comprehensive pre-service training, coaching and monthly opportunities to meet with other CASAs. We promise you will have the support you need to feel confident in this role.

The market is a fun place to be on a summer afternoon.  Parking on site.

Setup starts at 2 pm and involves tents, tables and chairs, signs, garbage cans and barricades.

At 3 pm vendors arrive and may need assistance with their setup.

At 4 pm the market opens,  volunteers will help keep tables clean, empty garbage, assist customers using wagon valet, hand out giveaways and take attendance counts.

At 7 pm the market is closed and volunteers will assist with tear down and putting equipment away.

Volunteer Drivers will help transport beneficiaries of the Adult Rehabilitation Center to their assigned Life Skills Assignment locations. Well-suited volunteers should enjoy driving, share a positive attitude with others, and help conversations to stay appropriate and beneficial to recovery. Volunteers are needed in the mornings and afternoons. Volunteers must complete a separate volunteer application with The Salvation Army, pass a background check, and pass an MVR for The Salvation Army. Vehicle (typically a 12-passenger van) and gas provided by The Salvation Army.

Are you enthusiastic about Iowa history? Do you enjoy connecting with people and sharing engaging stories? The State Historical Museum of Iowa is looking for passionate individuals to join our docent program.

As a museum docent, you'll be at the heart of our visitor experience, guiding tours, leading discussions, and bringing our collections to life for guests of all ages. This is a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge of Iowa’s past, develop public speaking skills, and contribute to your community. 

Docents must attend a comprehensive orientation program and participate in ongoing training sessions with museum staff throughout the year. Once training is completed, docents are expected to provide at least one guided tour each month during normal museum hours, as well as attend any meetings. Docents can sign up for available tours, or tours will be scheduled according to docent availability. Additional volunteer opportunities at special events will also be available to docents.

Docents are an important part of the visitor experience at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. Their primary responsibility is to lead exhibit tours for all ages of museum audiences. Additionally, docents are required to attend all meetings and training sessions, and continuously deepen their knowledge of the museum's collection

A presenter/teacher will provide a 45-minute presentation/teaching session from a selection of topics for the beneficiaries of the Adult Rehabilitation Center. Topics may include Life Skills, Mental Health Awareness, Nutrition & Well-Being, Christian Living, Physical Wellness, etc.
