Food Sorting: Food Bank of Iowa receives donations of food items that need labeled, counted and boxed. We need volunteers to make this possible and opportunities are scheduled in advance before we know what the food items may be when they arrive. Help us accept more food and feed the 175,000+ Iowans we serve!

Examples: Packing BackPack sacks, checking dates and food safety of food drive items, bagging bulk produce, putting bulk rice or pasta into family sized bags, boxing up like items into equally weighted boxes, and more!

GREAT FOR INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES & GROUPS (up to 20)!

Key Responsibilities:

Check condition of donated items, including dates, to ensure safety of consumption. Sort and place checked items into the appropriate categories or boxes or bins. Break down cardboard for recycling and dispose of trash.

Support/Training:  Volunteers will be given instructions upon arrival, and will have staff support throughout their shift.

Qualifications:

Able to stand, move, bend, and lift in warehouse environment. Able to read printed dates on packaging. Able to safely use box cutter, packing tape dispenser, and other packing tools as needed.

Age Requirement:  For safety reasons, all volunteers in the warehouse must be 10 or older.

Dress Code:  Closed-toe shoes are required in the warehouse.  Also, please dress comfortably and in layers.  The temperature in the warehouse can vary.

Volunteers will take the Food Bank of Iowa's van and drop off boxes, signs and/or bins for the collection of food in the Des Moines metro. Addresses and training provided on site. Valid driver's license required.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in loading donation supplies (boxes, pallets, bins, etc) into the van for use at pickup Use the Food Bank of Iowa van to drop-off collection items at assigned businesses/organizations Return the van to the Food Bank of Iowa to be unloaded Assist in unloading food items (if needed)

Qualifications:

Able to stand, move, bend, and lift 30 lbs. Valid drivers license and clean driving record 18 years of age or older

Support/Training: Instructions will be provided on-site at the beginning of the shift.

Age Requirement: Minimum age of 18

Dress Code: Closed-toed shoes are required; no exceptions. Dress comfortably.

T-Shirt Tote Bags are needed to serve families with a pre-packed sack of food at our mobile pantries. We need your help to turn donated T-Shirts into Tote Bags using our provided instructions (link below).

Description:

Volunteers will pack food supplies for families in boxes or bags to be distributed at mobile pantry sites to accommodate the need for drive-thru and pick up models. This is an emergency response for the effects of COVID19.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Work in an assembly line Load equal numbers of food items into each bag or box provided Ensure all items are checked for safety before placing in bag for distribution

 

Qualifications:

Volunteers must stay home if they or members of their family are not well Able to stand, move, bend, and lift 30 lbs. Willing and able to commit to a monthly shift

 

Support/Training: Instructions will be provided on-site at the beginning of the shift.

Age Requirement: Minimum age of 10

Dress Code: Closed-toed shoes are required; no exceptions. Dress comfortably. Gloves will be provided.

Volunteers will take the Food Bank of Iowa's van and deliver BackPack™ sacks to Des Moines area schools. Shifts will take place every other Wednesday and Friday morning throughout the school year. You can pick whichever day works for you! Valid driver's license required.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in loading BackPack boxes into the van for delivery Use the Food Bank of Iowa van to deliver BackPack sack boxes to local schools Assist the school in unloading the BackPack boxes onto a cart Return the van to the Food Bank of Iowa

Qualifications:

Able to stand, move, bend, and lift 30 lbs. Valid drivers license 18 years of age or older

Support/Training: Instructions will be provided on-site at the beginning of the shift. A map with the route along with a GPS will be provided.

Age Requirement: Minimum age of 18

Dress Code: Close-toed shoes are required; no exceptions. Dress comfortably.
