Did you know that kids who can’t read by the end of third grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of school than their peers?

Power Read is a literacy and mentoring program that pairs volunteers and elementary school students to read together on a weekly basis. Everybody Wins! Iowa and United Way of Central Iowa are partnering to provide reading and mentoring experiences to children who might not have one-on-one attention from an adult. Power Read’s ultimate goal? Volunteer: Mediators Help Landlords and Tenants Resolve Small Claims

Mediation is about solving problems without the burdens and expenses of the court system. Volunteer mediators make sure that everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, has access to mediation services. Whether people are dealing with a fender bender or a contract dispute, you can help create the environment where disputing parties can sit down, discuss, and solve their problems. Volunteers will work with the Polk County Court Mediation Program through the Small Claims Division of the Fifth Judicial District Court. Volunteers will be assigned to the Polk County Courthouse. Volunteers 55 years old and over who enroll in the 55+ Initiative are eligible for transportation reimbursement. Training is required and will be provided.
