Fundraising Committee Volunteer

Fundraising is about so much more than asking for money — it’s about building relationships, sharing stories, and creating meaningful opportunities for others to support our mission. We’re looking for a diverse team of volunteers to help organize, strategize, and energize our fundraising efforts.

We’re seeking volunteers with a mix of strengths to help energize and expand our fundraising efforts. Roles include community ambassadors who can represent us at events and networking meetings; Data-minded volunteers to help track metrics and strengthen our storytelling with hard hitting data; Event-savvy planners to support larger events; and creative idea generators who bring fresh perspectives, honest feedback, and a willingness to brainstorm and try new approaches. If you love connecting, analyzing, organizing, or dreaming up new possibilities — there’s a place for you on this committee.

1. Community Ambassador

- Serve as a positive, inspiring representative of Community Support Advocates at community events, networking meetings, and partner gatherings.

- Build new relationships with individuals, businesses, and community groups who may be interested in supporting our mission.

- Share stories, speak confidently about our programs, and help spark interest in our work.

- Identify opportunities for visibility, collaboration, and outreach.

2. Data & Metrics Lead
For the analytical thinker who loves turning information into insight

- Help create and refine systems for tracking meaningful fundraising metrics.

- Identify trends, set benchmarks, and recommend data-driven improvements to our strategies.

- Work with staff to integrate objective impact measures into fundraising stories and reports.

- Support the committee in making informed decisions based on results and patterns.

3. Event Planning & Partnerships Coordinator
For the planner, organizer, or well-connected community builder

- Provide leadership and support in planning larger fundraising events and campaigns.

- Contribute creative ideas and logistical expertise to ensure events run smoothly.

- Leverage personal and professional networks to secure venues, partners, sponsors, vendors, and in-kind support.

- Help develop materials, timelines, and processes that keep event planning on track.

4. Creative Strategist & Idea Generator
For the visionary, the dreamer, and the “what if we tried this?” thinker

- Bring fresh ideas, new approaches, and innovative strategies to the committee.

- Help brainstorm campaign concepts, storytelling angles, engagement activities, and community-wide efforts.

- Assist in testing new ideas and supporting their implementation.

- Ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions, and help the committee refine its approach.

Organize a donation drive as a group to collect items for our necessities pantry, which provides emergency items for the people we serve through our Des Moines programs. Contact the volunteer coordinator to see what items are needed during the time you plan to host the drive.

Youth thrive on quality time - movies, restaurants, trips to the Science Center. Outings like these provide opportunities for mentors to make a difference in a child's life. Whether discussing important life decisions or just having fun together, mentors help youth become their best. Quality time cannot be purchased, only shared, so we look to volunteers like you! 

Training for volunteers will help you learn to think like a mentor. Process includes application, background check, proof of car insurance and a valid driver's license.

This holiday season, we warmly invite you to help bring happiness to club members in need through our annual Embrace-A-Family program. There are two ways to get involved: 

Donors will be paired with families to select gifts from club members’ wish lists. 

Alternatively, you can make a financial contribution, and our team will handle the shopping for you.

WesleyLife Dahl Adult Day Center are looking for committed short term and/or long term volunteers to help and assist our participants during our open hours. Volunteers need to complete a volunteer application that includes a background check, TB test, and Dependent Adult Abuse and other trainings. Volunteer duties are but not limited to: 1:1 and small group activities with participants, cleaning, meals and meal prep, activity prep and facilitation, outings.

The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman coordinates a volunteer ombudsman program, and we are actively seeking volunteers throughout the state of Iowa!  After completing initial certification training, a volunteer ombudsman in our program will make regular visits to an assigned long-term care facility to help serve as a voice for residents, talking with them about their rights, empowering them, and providing advocacy.

Our volunteers are asked to spend a minimum of 3 hours per month in their assigned facility, complete monthly reports, work with long-term care ombudsman staff at the local and state levels, and complete annual continuing education to remain certified. 

Visits to facilities are generally unannounced and can be made at any time, any day generally between the hours of 8am-8pm. For a volunteer who may wish to make an impact but not wish/be able to make visits to facilities, there are more administrative volunteer opportunities available on an individualized basis.

WesleyLife Hospice is looking for compassionate and caring individuals to give the gift of time and presence to individuals in Central Iowa. Our patients needs this more than ever. Become a Greeter for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program with Iowa Center for Economic Success.

We are looking for volunteers who want to have significant impact in the lives of people in their own community. If you are a friendly person, this could be the role for you!

You would be the first person to interact with taxpayers coming to have their tax returns prepared free of charge. Your responsibility would be to greet the clients, make sure they have some basic tax documents, and add them to the list for tax preparation.

Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa has an exciting, short-term, mission-focused volunteer opportunity for you to work with elementary-aged girls to help them build courage, confidence, and character in Girl Scout Club!

This short-term after-school program is for girls in grades K-5 and takes place one hour each week, for five weeks. Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa partners with schools and community partners around the Central Iowa area to make these Girl Scout Clubs possible! Several after school Girl Scout Clubs are starting soon and we need your help as a club facilitator!

Club size, dates, and times vary by location. We’ll provide you with training, resources, lesson plans and supplies for each session, as well as ongoing support to deliver a positive learning environment for girls! Each week, you’ll lead participants in hands-on activities—encouraging them as they learn and try new things.

While participating in a traditional Girl Scout troop experience is the heart of Girl Scouting, some girls and their families have barriers and challenges that prevent them from having access to a Girl Scout troop. That’s where Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa’s Mission Outreach programs come in! The goal of Mission Outreach is to meet girls where they are, in an effort to reduce barriers and expand access to Girl Scout programming, providing opportunities for leadership, adventure, and success. We work with youth-serving community partners in our council to bring high-quality, short-term Girl Scout experiences to girls. A part of the Mission Outreach program is Girl Scout Club! Club sessions are designed based off the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, providing girls an onsite and hands-on learning environment to explore the areas of STEAM, outdoors, life skills, and entrepreneurship to build courage, confidence, and character. All activities are girl-led and guided by a trained Girl Scout Club Volunteer! Our activity plans include: Self-expression and empowerment, Social relationship development, STEAM, Teamwork and leadership, Financial literacy and money management, Engaged citizenship.

Ever wished you had a backstage pass to see everything that goes into a production? This is it! As a volunteer working backstage at The Des Moines Playhouse, you'll do much more than observe the action. If ladders, lights, and hand tools intrigue you, consider joining the Light Hanging Crew which carefully positions each light prior to a show. Volunteers are also needed to run the light board, followspots, and sound board during shows. And for a true backstage experience during the show, consider joining the shift/fly Crew. Crew volunteers stay busy changing the set during scene breaks and intermission - including scenery that is flown in from above! Come make a scene as a member of The Des Moines Playhouse set crew. We have a great opportunity for volunteers who enjoy building and painting to assist the technical director in constructing the different sets and large prop pieces that star in our plays. We have jobs for the skilled carpenter and for the novice handyman trying to buff up some basic carpentry skills. On the same note, accomplished painters are welcomed and will have the opportunity to showcase their skills, but we welcome volunteers without any experience as an artist. Want to be a part of the theatre without the stage fright? The Des Moines Playhouse needs welcoming individuals to greet patrons, help them find their seats, hand out programs, and help late arrivals be seated at an appropriate time and as quietly as possible. This team creates a memorable experience for our guests. In return, you'll get to see the show for yourself. Other responsibilities include making sure the theater is presentable for the next performance. You can volunteer individually, or bring some friends and family to fill the house positions needed for each show. This volunteer commitment begins one hour prior to curtain time and continues until the end of the performance. You can volunteer just once or for as many performances as you like. The next time you go to a play, you could lean over to your friends and say, "I made that." As a stitcher for The Des Moines Playhouse, you'll help build our costumes and put the finishing touches on projects. If you can sew, from simple alterations to full-scale construction, come spend some time in our costume shop and help bring our plays to life. If sewing's not your thing, you can jump in behind the scenes as a dresser or hair and makeup volunteer. Dressers are the extra pair of hands our actors need to make fast costume changes during performances.

Our food pantry is very busy all year but especially during the holidays as families struggle to provide basic necessities along with holiday gifts. 

The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge is a home away from home for cancer patients and a caregiver when their cancer treatment takes them far from home. There are over 30 lodges nationwide with the closest lodges to Central Iowa located in Iowa City, Iowa, Omaha, Nebraska and Rochester, Minnesota.  Our lodges provide lodging to patients who have to travel over 40 miles for treatment and come fully furnished thanks to the support of many generous donors. We are always looking for additional support through financial donations, or supplies including non-perishable items, paper products, and many other items that help to provide comfortable and clean home away from home.  If you or your company is interested in supporting our Hope Lodges, please reach out to us for our current "wish list" or supply needs.

There are also other opportunities to volunteer including doing activities with the guests, preparing meals or general housekeeping.  We would be happy to talk to you on how you and your team can give back and make an impact in the fight against cancer.

Volunteer Job Title: Grant Writer

Purpose: We are looking for two volunteers who will work as a team to research and apply for grants that ultimately help to keep the White Eagle Multicultural Pow Wow financially secure.

Location: Remote

Key Responsibilities:

·       Identify and research grants to apply for from various government, private foundations, and corporate sponsors.

·       Prepare and submit grant applications.

·       Keep track of grant deadlines and ensure the requirements of grants are met.

·       Build relationships with funding organizations, ensuring follow-up on the progress made in our organization due to a grant being awarded.

A Neighborhood Coordinator creates a strong support network where neighbors help neighbors, fostering unity and connection. Instead of individual donations, it’s many at one time - amplifying impact! Your vision inspires others to step up to fill a need, while strengthening community bonds with every food drive and delivery.

You will be the main contact for your community, recruiting food donors, supporting volunteers, and organizing monthly food drives. Neighborhood coordinators spread the word about the designated day for the food drives, pick up donations from neighborhood porches, and move food from porch to pantry. You will create and support a strong partnership with your local pantry ensuring they have the food they need, when they need it, to feed neighbors in need.

Need a project to do at home? We need bags for the Families Forward Bidwell Pantry. Recycle your old t-shirts into no-sew t-shirt bags.  We can use over 120 t-shirt bags per day, so we welcome large donations of these bags. (We are now serving 6,000 to 9,000 people per month.)  

Making no-sew t-shirt bags is a great project that you can do from home and allows you to re-purposes an old t-shirt.​ No-sew t-shirt bags are sturdier than plastic bags, can hold more food items, and be re-used.  This project is also kid-friendly and environmentally friendly.

We also need used plastic grocery bags, paper grocery bags and cloth bags.

The Volunteer English Instructor would be responsible for facilitating high-quality English for adult learners. Facilitate classes for ELL students in English “instruct

‘ and collaborate with multilingual co-teachers to interpret important class announcements and/or communication. Collaborate with RIVA AmeriCorps members to adapt lesson plans and learning activities to meet students’ needs and interests.

Volunteers prepare a meal to serve shelter clients for dinner. Needs to feed up to 35 people.

Are you outgoing, community-minded, and passionate about making a difference? We’re looking for an energetic volunteer to help represent LifeServe Blood Center at local events and help spread the word about the importance of blood donation. We will provide the event set up, promotional hand outs and talking points. If you love chatting with people and want to help save lives in your own community by promoting local blood drives, we’d love to have you on our team! The special events and the time commitment will vary.

We are looking for a self-motivated and detail-oriented person to thoroughly clean the inside of our delivery vehicles. This would be a 2-hour minimum per week commitment on Sundays. The project would involve wiping down the dashboard and console, cleaning the windshields, vacuuming the carpets and the upholstery. Cleaning kit and shop vac are provided on site. Volunteer will need to drive the vehicles so a complete background and motor vehicle check will need to be done.

We are looking for local volunteers who are willing to transport blood products and supplies to our donor centers and area local hospitals.
We have a wide variety of trips, ranging from 45 minutes to 3 hours or more. We provide the vehicle and gas card to fill-up after each trip.
We utilize an online scheduling system which allows you to manage your own schedule.
The schedule of trips can begin as early as 5:15 am and can end as late as 11:00 pm, 7 days a week.
Our greatest need right now is evenings and weekends, but also encourage anyone interested to inquire.

SCIC is pleased to offer Community-Based English Learning (CBESL), a program designed to address one of the biggest barriers refugees and immigrants face — limited English-speaking skills. This barrier often hinders access to education, employment, and upward mobility. Our CBESL Program is an entry-level course specifically for adult refugees and immigrants at the beginner level. What sets our program apart is the Co-Teacher method, which pairs each student with a co-teacher from their own community. The co-teacher speaks the student’s native language, understands their culture, and is aware of the specific challenges refugees and immigrants face when accessing community resources. Co-teachers assist in delivering class material, facilitate communication between students and the lead teacher, and provide feedback to ensure that the class is culturally relevant and effective. Co-teachers also play a vital role in building relationships within the community, spreading the word about our classes, and staying in touch with students outside the classroom to improve retention and success. In addition, we are looking for volunteers to watch children aged 2-3 years olds (when volunteers are available) during the ELL classes. Volunteers will provide a safe and nurturing environment while parents focus on learning. We also offer a preschool program for children 3-5 years old to support families as they attend classes. Beyond academics, our program offers much-needed structure and supervision after school, along with opportunities for recreation, socialization, and mentoring. Students engage in enriching activities that promote physical, emotional, and social well-being while being guided by positive role models. The Pet Project helps keep pets with their families and out of shelters through proactive programming. 

We are looking for someone with great organizational skills who would like to join our active all-volunteer board to manage our pantry. The position includes scheduling shifts, training new volunteers for pantry work or special activities, and keep the pantry shelves organized to ensure we use the food with the closest expiration date first. The role would partner closely with the Inventory Manager position.

Our organization does not require a financial commitment to join the board, but we actively participate in the operation and serving our clients. We ask that members support our activities and provide a level of donation they are comfortable with.

Commitment would be to attend one-hour board meeting monthly, work a pantry shift on Saturday each month, attend the pantry committee meeting every six weeks, and flexible hours to organize product and volunteer needs.

The Pet Project helps keep pets with their families and out of shelters through proactive programming. 

We are looking for someone with experience managing social media accounts and updating a Wordpress website who would like to join our organization as a volunteer (possibility for board membership if desired)! Our current social media manager needs some help to be able to accomplish everything we want to do. The common actives include creating posts, managing our social media account, and updating our website as needed.

If you prefer just volunteering without a board commitment, this work is volunteer and can be done fully remote if desired.

Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devasting to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. DEITY Fastpitch is looking for current and former softball coaches and players to conduct and/or assist with DEITY FP camps and programs. This opportunity is well-suited towards those who played at the college level and/or has significant coaching experience and want to stay connected, give back, and help grow the numbers, quality, and inclusiveness of softball.

SUMMARY: DEITY Fastpitch volunteer coaches will aid in the organization’s mission to introduce, teach and promote softball at an early age to girls from underrepresented communities, with the goal of the participating players taking advantage of the interpersonal, health, and educational opportunities the sport has to offer. Volunteer coaches will collaborate with board leadership, key volunteers, and local players to conduct and/or assist with DEITY FP camps, lessons, and programs.

As a volunteer coach with DEITY FP, you will have the ability to pass along your affinity for the game of softball to a new generation of players and families. Programming will cover elementary through high school participants, which will allow for a diversity of volunteer experience. Volunteer coaches may be asked to assist with on-site (indoor or outdoor) event set-up and administration.

Purpose:  Members of the Safety Team provide an extra set of eyes and ears throughout the hospital.  In this role, volunteers may assist providing directions, reporting incidents, and crowd control.

One of our greatest needs at Ronald McDonald House is for home-cooked meals for our families. After a long day at the hospital, families are truly grateful for a hot meal waiting for them. This is an ideal volunteer opportunity for groups of family, friends, corporate teams, or teens looking to fulfill community service or Silver Cord hours. We have two Houses where you can volunteer: our House near Blank Children’s Hospital and our House within MercyOne (located on the North Side, 4th Floor).

FAQ

How many people can participate in our group?
We limit groups to 10 people due to kitchen size. For groups larger than 10, we suggest splitting up: 10 people can cook, and the rest can assist with housekeeping.

What do we need to bring?
We provide all cooking tools and utensils. You’ll just need to bring the ingredients. You’re also welcome to use any canned or dry goods we have available. Feel free to call us to check what’s on hand. *Please keep in mind, Per RMH Global Guidelines, we cannot accept homemade food prepared outside a licensed kitchen.

How much food should we make?
Please prepare a meal for 35 people for each House. If you sign up to make a meal for both Houses we ask you make a meal for 70 people.
To keep a consistent schedule, we ask that meals be ready by 6 p.m.

What time should we arrive?
The volunteer kitchen is reserved from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you’d like to come earlier, please call ahead to confirm kitchen availability.

Can we stay and visit with families?
You’re welcome to stay and visit with families during the meal. However, many families return later in the evening, so we leave the meal out for an hour and then store it as leftovers.

What should we make?
Feel free to be creative and have fun with your meal! There’s no need to worry about dietary restrictions.

The Ronald McDonald House is looking for dedicated volunteers to assist with our weekly housekeeping. Our team relies on weekly or biweekly House Helpers to help our families feel at home while they’re with us.

About the Role
As a House Helper, you’ll assist with various needs, including cleaning, laundry, room preparation, administrative tasks, and more. Volunteers may be asked to help with a range of tasks depending on the House’s needs during your shift, such as packing lunches, organizing donations, preparing evening meals, and supporting admissions.

If you have a specific skill, such as carpentry or event planning, please let us know-unique opportunities may be available!

Help make our Ronald McDonald House families feel a little more at home by preparing a casserole or freezer-ready meal! Having pre-made meals ready for our families allows us to offer a comforting meal at any time. This opportunity is great for individuals, family gatherings, friends, or team-building days.

You have total freedom to make any freezer-friendly dish-traditional casseroles, pizzas, pasta dishes, soups, and more. Just keep in mind that meals should be prepared to freeze for future use.

Co-Teachers only need to be able to speak English and have a desire to help new Iowans learn new skills and feel welcome. We have a lead teacher that sets the curriculum and guides everyone, co-teachers will assist anyone who needs extra help. The class is very basic and made for people of all skill levels.

Classes are the first full 3 weeks of each month on Monday and Wednesday from 10-12. No supplies needed, just yourself!

A presenter/teacher will provide a 45-minute presentation/teaching session from a selection of topics for the beneficiaries of the Adult Rehabilitation Center. Topics may include Life Skills, Mental Health Awareness, Nutrition & Well-Being, Christian Living, Physical Wellness, etc.

There are many opportunities for helping out with transportation at USCRI. This can include pick up / drop offs for the classes we offer our clients, doctor's appointments, or job interviews. Some opportunities are on call / short notices, some are scheduled in advance through Sign Up Genius. This opportunity is best for volunteers with flexible schedules.

Bus Orientation Leaders will meet refugee clients at their home and ride the bus with them to get them familiar with public transportation. Clients may want to know routes to the grocery store, doctors' office, or any other place they may frequent. While riding the bus, the Bus Orientation Leader will help the client understand the ins and outs of riding the bus, Volunteers are allowed and encouraged to use apps such as Google Maps or Ride Time to plan the trip and assist the clients. Interpreters and training are provided as needed. 

No family should have to give up their pet because they can’t afford its food. You can help these families and their pets by lending a hand in our pet pantry on Saturdays. Be there to greet clients and fill their monthly food order at our warehouse or assist with packing Animeals – our partnership with Meals on Wheels. Consider dedicating three hours on an upcoming Saturday between 9 a.m.  – 2 p.m.  Children under 14 are allowed to volunteer with a parent. Contact us today! 

The IRC in Des Moines seeks multiple volunteers to teach required Cultural Orientation classes, where newly arrived refugees learn important information about life in the US and Iowa

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  Domestically, our 29 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.  

The Des Moines, IA office was opened in July of 2022, serving more than 200 refugees in its first year. Our operations expanded to Iowa City with our office opening in February 2024. The Health and Wellness Coordinator supports clients in navigating complex medical and benefits systems, and designs and connects clients to programs and resources that improve their quality of life.
