Overview
Conversation/ESL Partners support adult newcomers who want to improve their everyday English skills. Volunteers meet one‑on‑one with learners to practice speaking, build confidence, and help participants navigate daily life in Iowa. This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy connecting with people, learning about different cultures, and supporting newcomers in a friendly, low‑pressure environment.
Responsibilities
- Meet weekly with an assigned learner for conversation‑based English practice
- Support learners with speaking, listening, vocabulary, and everyday communication
- Prepare simple conversation topics or activities based on learner goals and interests
- Maintain professional boundaries and respect cultural differences
- Communicate promptly with the Program Manager about scheduling changes
- Keep brief notes on attendance and learner progress as requested
Time Commitment
- 1–2 hours per week
- Minimum 3‑month commitment preferred
- Flexible scheduling; sessions may be in person or virtual
Qualifications
- Clear, fluent English speaking skills
- Patience, cultural sensitivity, and a welcoming attitude
- Ability to explain ideas simply and encourage learner confidence
- At least 18 years old
- Completion of RIVA orientation and training
