Volunteer meal donors prepare or purchase a child-friendly dinner for up to 20-25 people and drop it off at the shelter between 4:00–4:30 pm. No serving involved — just drop and go.

Do you love chatting with people from all walks of life and sharing your love of affordable homeownership? The tabling ambassador helps the Habitat for Humanity Resource Development and Marketing team by talking with various event attendees at local festivals, volunteer recruitment or corporate events.

If organizing decorations, supplies, and logistics for events is your jam, we welcome you to volunteer for Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity's Home Ownership Celebration/Events Ambassador volunteer role. We host roughly 4-5 homeownership celebrations each year to congratulate new homeowners on their accomplishments and host additional events for the organization throughout the year.  

Frequency: 7 –10 opportunities a year (1 – 3 hour increments) 

Volunteer tasks include: 

Door to door invitation distribution  

Preparing welcome baskets for families 

Confirm final vendor logistics (coordinate with partners providing food) 

Cutting and preparing printed material 

Organizing event supplies prior to event 

Event set-up and tear-down

This is an 11-month AmeriCorps service opportunity (28-30 hours per week) with a living allowance, Segal Education Award, professional development opportunities, and additional member benefits.

Volunteers are needed to organize our donation area and do light cleaning in our shared living spaces (living room, dining room, and kitchen). ​Volunteers would be organizing clothing, personals/toiletries, feminine hygiene products, diapers, cleaning products, school supplies, food items, and much more. We provide basic necessities every month for up to the 77 families staying in New Directions Shelter, The Home Connection, and our other housing programs.​

​This is a great project for a single person to work on, or you can sign up to bring a group (up to 10 people at a time). Volunteers should be 12 and older. Youth 14 years of age and younger should have an adult on site with them while volunteering.

WesleyLife Hospice is looking for compassionate and caring individuals to give the gift of time and presence to individuals in Central Iowa. Our patients needs this more than ever. Volunteers support patients and families in a variety of ways. Finding common interests through conversation, listening to cherished memories, holding a hand, playing a game, or taking a stroll are all things you could do to brighten someone's day. Des Moines Art Center

The Des Moines Art Center hosts a variety of free, public-facing events throughout the year — from family days and community celebrations to hands-on art activities and performances. These events are designed to welcome visitors of all ages and backgrounds and to make the museum feel accessible, creative, and alive.

We’re looking for event-based volunteers who want to support these experiences on an occasional basis, without a long-term or weekly commitment.

Event volunteers play an important role in creating a warm, organized, and welcoming environment for visitors. Depending on the event and your interests, volunteers may:

Greet and orient visitors as they arrive

Assist with hands-on art activities (no art experience required)

Support storytimes, performances, or interactive programs

Help visitors navigate the building and event schedule

The DMARC Food Pantry at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to assist clients with food orders, stock shelves, rotate inventory, package personal care items and accept donations. Volunteers will help families shop to meet their food and personal care needs. Some lifting is required. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, Monday through Friday as well as Tuesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Shifts are in two to three hour increments. Volunteers may either commit to one shift per week, or volunteer intermittently as a sub. The Clothing Closet at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to accept, sort and straighten donations of clothing, shoes, toys, towels, linens, blankets, home decor and housewares. Volunteers will also assist clients as needed and keep the room neat and organized. Morning and afternoon shifts available, Monday through Friday. Shifts are in two to three hour increments. Volunteers may commit to a regular weekly shift, or volunteer on an intermittent basi.  Opportunities also available on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Some lifting is required. The Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm is a 3,000 square foot indoor farm capable of producing 20,000 pounds of leafy greens a year. Our farm provides some of our most at risk populations in the metro a source of fresh, healthy greens year-round. We also provide greens to other WesleyLife and local communities.

Are you looking for a great team-building volunteer opportunity for your work group/department, school team or group, church group, social club, or friend group? If so, we invite you to learn, work and have some fun together in the Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm! Individual volunteers are also greatly appreciated!

Training will be provided for every task. We do not require a background in gardening or farming, and only ask that you have an open mind and drive to help feed others. Come help us grow nutrition for those who need it most.

Become a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Tax Preparer with Iowa Center for Economic Success.

We are looking for volunteers who want to have significant impact in the lives of people in their own community. You can become an IRS trained and certified volunteer tax preparer prior to the beginning of the tax season and then assist taxpayers by accurately preparing their taxes for free. In-person and online training available.

We are looking for volunteers who want to have significant impact in the lives of people in their own community. If you are a friendly person, this could be the role for you!

You would be the first person to interact with taxpayers coming to have their tax returns prepared free of charge. Your responsibility would be to greet the clients, make sure they have some basic tax documents, and add them to the list for tax preparation.

September 11 is a day our nation remembers with reflection, gratitude, and respect. We honor the lives lost, recognize the courage of the first responders and service members who answered the call, and remember the countless individuals who came together to help their neighbors in the days that followed.

At Meals from the Heartland, that same spirit of service is at the heart of our mission. Every meal packaged by volunteers is an act of compassion, providing nourishment to families facing food insecurity and communities recovering from disasters and times of crisis.

West Des Moines Human Services is in need of a driver for their food rescue program on Wednesday or Friday mornings from approximately 9 am to noon.  This opportunity involves driving a sprinter van to various locations in West Des Moines and picking up food, and then returning to WDM Human Services to unload it.  Some lifting is required. The DMARC Food Pantry at West Des Moines Human Services is in need of volunteers to stock shelves, rotate inventory, package personal care items, assist with food rescue and unload donations. Lifting or moving of up to 40 lbs is required. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, Monday through Friday. In general, shifts are two hours, but this is flexible. Please note, this position is open to volunteers who can help on an ongoing basis by committing to a regular weekly 2-hour shift. Amanda the Panda seeks Group Facilitators to help fulfill its mission of providing hope and healing to individuals and families who have experienced the death of a loved one. With the goal of promoting peer support and connectivity, our Braving Grief support groups work to recognize how grief affects our minds and our bodies. Our Braving Grief series includes specific groups like Traumatic Loss,  Little Footprints: Perinatal and Infant Loss, and Youth groups. Each activity helps participants identify and accept grief emotions like anger and guilt, learn healthy coping skills, and create rituals to honor loved ones who have died.

Groups are held in 6-week sessions on Monday evenings, and volunteers could choose to help out with 1 or multiple weeks. Dinner is also provided each week. 

Everybody Wins! Iowa (EWI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring children’s success in school and life through weekly one-to-one read-aloud experiences with caring adults.

EWI is seeking Board Members who will serve a minimum three (3) year term and assist EWI to achieve its mission to increase children’s success in school and in life through reading and mentoring experiences with caring volunteers. Terms are eligible for renewal to a maximum of three (3) consecutive terms. The Board meets every other month (July, September, November, January, March, and May) on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 PM. The Adult Literacy Center is celebrating 50 years of service to the community! Join 1000s of volunteers who, over the years, have invested 1-2 hours a week to meet one-to-one with an adult who needs to learn to read, write, and speak better. Become a part of the transformative learning experience as adults gain skills, confidence, and competence.

Adults enroll in the DMACC Adult Literacy Center to become more independent in the world of words, to get a better job, earn a high school diploma, and speak and understand English better. Volunteers meet with their assigned student at the DMACC Urban Campus or at an area library. 

No prior teaching experience is necessary. Come with a desire to learn and make a direct and personal investment in an adult learner's life (and in their family's life). You will receive information and materials to assist with tutoring your adult learner.

Overview:

We’re seeking skilled and passionate photographers and videographers to help capture the impact of our Open Books mental health awareness campaign. This pro bono role allows you to use your creative talents to tell meaningful stories, highlight campaign events, and bring visibility to mental health in our community.

Responsibilities:

- Capture high-quality photos and/or video footage of the quarterly events, with a specific focus on capturing the storytelling portion of the evening.

- Provide raw footage or edited assets (if you want!) for use in social media, newsletters, and campaign materials.

- Respect participant privacy and obtain consent for media use when necessary.

Qualifications:

Experience in photography and/or videography, including editing and post-production (optional).

Professionalism, reliability, and comfort working in dynamic, community-focused event settings.

Ability to work respectfully with diverse participants, including individuals impacted by mental health conditions.

Access to your own equipment (camera, lenses, lighting, etc.).

Time Commitment:

Approximately 1.5 hours per event, 4 times per year.

Purpose

Help make our studio tools more accessible by creating clear, easy-to-follow instructional resources for Momentum artists. In this role, you’ll demonstrate how to use studio equipment—such as 3D printers, sewing machines, Cricut machines, and more—while capturing both video and step-by-step written guides that artists can reference independently. Your work will support skill-building, confidence, and safe use of equipment across the studio.

General Expectations

As a volunteer, you are expected to:

- Learn and demonstrate proper use of studio equipment, including safety considerations.

- Create clear, step-by-step instructional guides to accompany video content.

- Capture video demonstrations that align with written instructions for ease of use.Use platforms such as Scribe, Whale, or similar to document processes.

- Take an iterative approach—testing instructions and refining based on feedback.

- Engage with artists to understand where confusion may occur and adjust accordingly.

- Ensure instructions are accessible and easy to follow for a range of skill levels.

- Communicate with staff regarding priorities, equipment use, and documentation needs.

- Represent Momentum’s mission and values in a positive and professional manner.

Time Commitment

This is a flexible, project-based role. Volunteers may focus on documenting one piece of equipment or multiple tools over time. Scheduling will be coordinated with staff based on studio availability and project needs.

About Community Support Advocates:

Community Support Advocates is a 501c3 mission-driven nonprofit serving individuals with mental health diagnoses and disabilities through innovative programming, advocacy, and the arts.  We’re looking for a detail-oriented and motivated Fundraising & Research Intern to support our development team. This unpaid internship offers hands-on experience in nonprofit fundraising, prospect research, and donor data management. The Fundraising & Research Intern will report directly to the Director of Development.

Key Responsibilities:

- Research individual donors, grant opportunities, corporate giving programs, and foundations.

- Compile, analyze, and organize donor and prospect lists.

- Systematize donor outreach protocols.

- Assist with light database management and data entry.

Volunteer Drivers will help transport beneficiaries of the Adult Rehabilitation Center to their assigned Life Skills Assignment locations. Well-suited volunteers should enjoy driving, share a positive attitude with others, and help conversations to stay appropriate and beneficial to recovery. Volunteers are needed in the mornings and afternoons. Volunteers must complete a separate volunteer application with The Salvation Army, pass a background check, and pass an MVR for The Salvation Army. As a museum docent, you'll be at the heart of our visitor experience, guiding tours, leading discussions, and bringing our collections to life for guests of all ages. This is a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge of Iowa’s past, develop public speaking skills, and contribute to your community. 

Docents must attend a comprehensive orientation program and participate in ongoing training sessions with museum staff throughout the year. Once training is completed, docents are expected to provide at least one guided tour each month during normal museum hours, as well as attend any meetings. Docents can sign up for available tours, or tours will be scheduled according to docent availability. Additional volunteer opportunities at special events will also be available to docents.

Docents are an important part of the visitor experience at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. Their primary responsibility is to lead exhibit tours for all ages of museum audiences. Additionally, docents are required to attend all meetings and training sessions, and continuously deepen their knowledge of the museum's collection

A presenter/teacher will provide a 45-minute presentation/teaching session from a selection of topics for the beneficiaries of the Adult Rehabilitation Center. Topics may include Life Skills, Mental Health Awareness, Nutrition & Well-Being, Christian Living, Physical Wellness, etc.

Momentum Art Studio Volunteer

Purpose

Support the day-to-day operations of Momentum Art Studio by helping maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for artists. Momentum Art Studio operates within Mainframe Studios and serves dozens of artists each week. As a studio volunteer, you’ll provide an extra set of hands to help the studio run smoothly while fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive space for creative expression. While basic art knowledge can be helpful, it is not required. What matters most is a willingness to support others, create a welcoming environment, and assist the Program Coordinator as needed.

Volunteers are expected to be adaptable and responsive to shifting studio needs, helping wherever support is most useful on a given day. Experience working with individuals with disabilities or mental health conditions is a plus. Compassion, patience, reliability, and a warm, respectful approach are essential.

The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman coordinates a volunteer ombudsman program, and we are actively seeking volunteers throughout the state of Iowa!  After completing initial certification training, a volunteer ombudsman in our program will make regular visits to an assigned long-term care facility or to multiple facilities in a region to help serve as a voice for residents, talking with them about their rights, empowering them, and providing advocacy.

Our volunteers are asked to spend a minimum of 3 hours per month in their assigned facility(ies), complete monthly reports, work with long-term care ombudsman staff at the local and state levels, and complete annual continuing education to remain certified. 

Visits to facilities are generally unannounced and can be made at any time, any day generally between the hours of 8am-8pm. For a volunteer who may wish to make an impact but not wish/be able to make visits to facilities, there are more administrative volunteer opportunities available on an individualized basis.

The Science Center of Iowa (SCI) is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help deliver positive and engaging customer experiences for our guests. In this role, you’ll serve as a friendly and knowledgeable source of information—greeting visitors at the door, guiding them through the check-in and ticketing process, and answering questions about SCI’s programs, exhibits, and events. Volunteers will assist guests throughout the building by providing directions, helping with lost children, and ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all. You’ll also bring our interactive exhibits to life by demonstrating how they work, offering insights, and sparking curiosity through questions and conversation. Additional opportunities include assisting school groups with exhibit interpretation and activity sheets and encouraging all visitors to participate in our daily programs. As a monthly market shopper, volunteers are responsible for shopping alongside clients, bagging groceries, and taking items out to client's cars. They may also assist with restocking shelves and preparing the pantry for opening and shift change.

A Friendly Caller like you allows Meals on Wheels to provide an added support system to participants who are isolated and often lonely. Your call may support the participant’s emotional wellbeing and give peace of mind to family members who worry about their loved ones but can’t always be with them.

Calls can take place 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. You can establish a regular call schedule with your matched clients on a 1x/week, 2x/month, or 1x/month basis. Calls last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

This is a great time to become a Friendly Caller volunteer! We are matching Meals on Wheels participants with volunteers.

Engage in saving lives from cancer by selling potted mum plants within your company/organization, neighborhood, family and friends. There are five great products to promote, a 4 inch potted mum ($12), a 6 inch potted mum ($20), a Gift of Hope mum ($25) or Cancer Care Package ($25) to be delivered cancer patients at Des Moines area cancer centers and a Gift of Gratitude mum ($25) to be delivered to healthcare workers to be delivered to cancer patients at Des Moines area hospitals. We will provide you with all the materials you need in order to be a successful sales coordinator!

We are recruiting sales coordinators to help us promote the campaign and collect orders both in person and online in late July/early August, turn in your orders and then deliver the 4 and 6 inch potted mums to those who purchased towards the end of August.  We will take care of delivering the Gift of Hope and Gift of Gratitude mums to the local cancer centers for you and those who purchased them.
