Des Moines Art Center About Event VolunteeringThe Des Moines Art Center hosts a variety of free, public-facing events throughout the year — from family days and community celebrations to hands-on art activities and performances. These events are designed to welcome visitors of all ages and backgrounds and to make the museum feel accessible, creative, and alive. We’re looking for event-based volunteers who want to support these experiences on an occasional basis, without a long-term or weekly commitment. What Event Volunteers DoEvent volunteers play an important role in creating a warm, organized, and welcoming environment for visitors. Depending on the event and your interests, volunteers may: Greet and orient visitors as they arrive Assist with hands-on art activities (no art experience required) Support storytimes, performances, or interactive programs Help visitors navigate the building and event schedule Encourage participation and answer basic questions Assist with light setup or cleanup before or after events Volunteers always work alongside staff and are given clear instructions and support. Time CommitmentEvent-based: volunteer for one event or multiple events, as your schedule allows Typical shifts range from 2–4 hours, often on weekends No ongoing or weekly commitment required This role is ideal for people who want flexibility, are new to volunteering, or prefer short-term opportunities. Who We’re Looking ForEvent volunteers are: Friendly, dependable, and comfortable interacting with the public Interested in supporting families, children, and community members Able to work in lively, sometimes busy environments At least 14 year-old No prior museum or teaching experience required This role is well-suited for students, educators, artists, retirees, parents, and anyone interested in supporting community-centered arts experiences.
