Iowa International Center is looking for a volunteer with web design experience. Responsibilities include updating our visual appearance, as well as optimizing user experience in the following ways:

Mobile Compatibility - Users can easily search and find information, as well as easily donate through their mobile devices Calendaring functionality – We want keep a calendar of cultural and educational events in Iowa relating to immigrant, refugees, and civic diplomacy. This needs to be user-friendly, easily sorted, and there should also be a form where new event submissions can be made Resource Navigation – We want to integrate resources from our welcometoiowa.org website, which contains resources for new Iowans. Other resources we will want to include are useful links for interpreters as well as ELL volunteer resources. We will also need our pages to be able to toggle to different language translations and to have the resources be printer-friendly. Streamline/simplify our design – We have a lot of information which is producing clutter and is also buried in the current layout. We want a website with intuitive navigation that can convey the essential information. Appointment scheduling – We would like to build a scheduling system for interpretation appointments

Volunteer: Homestay Hosts for International Visitors

Have an extra bedroom? Homestay hosting is an excellent opportunity to spend time with international visitors in your own home as you provide lodging during their Des Moines program. We have homestay hosting opportunities for as little as three days or as long as three weeks! Iowa International Center provides homestay hosting for approximately three programs per year, but we accept applications all year round. This is one of our most popular opportunities!

Volunteer: Drivers

Have you always wondered what goes on behind closed doors in some of Des Moines’ most successful companies and offices? Get a chance to sit in on professional meetings with international visitors as a volunteer driver. It’s guaranteed that you’ll learn something new! Volunteer drivers must have a valid driver’s license and are subject to background checks. Iowa law requires drivers who are compensated for providing transportation to have a taxicab license; therefore, we cannot reimburse our volunteer drivers for their mileage. Driver opportunities are available year-round.

Wondering how you can help bridge the gaps that divide our world? Volunteer with the dynamic team at The Iowa International Center - an organization promoting cultural respect and understanding. Your time will be well-spent as you with assist office staff with scheduling interpretation services, processing payments and database management.

Qualifications:

Background in any of the following but not limited to: customer service, database management, foreign language. Computer experience in Microsoft Office software, specifically Word and Excel. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including strong interpersonal skills. Ability to be self-directed and work independently or as part of a team. Ability to handle multiple tasks, set deadlines, and maintain accurate records. Problem solving skills including the ability to resolve conflicts and recommend an appropriate course of action and ability to stay poised under pressure. Cross cultural living experience and/or knowledge of a foreign language preferred but not required.

International guests visit Iowa year-round, so there’s always an opportunity to be a host.
