Opportunities From: United Way of Central Iowa

Join the City of Marion, Trees Forever, and INHF at Faulkes Heritage Woods in Marion for an afternoon of removing invasive Japanese barberry from the woodland understory. The natural occurrence of the 2020 derecho devastated the 110 acres of white oaks — a tree that takes generations to grow into the mighty oaks we all admire. The downed trees created canopy gaps that allow barberry to flourish, where it shades out native spring ephemerals and competes with young white oak seedlings — key species needed to rebuild the resilient oak canopy that once kept invasive plants in check. 

We hope you’ll join us as a community to help us ensure that future generations get to once again enjoy a stroll amongst the mighty white oaks. We'll start the afternoon with a half-mile hike to warm up before we get to work. After the restoration work, we'll regroup at Goldfinch Tap+Eatery to celebrate over a hard-earned beverage.

**If weather conditions are unfavorable on April 3, the event will be rescheduled for Friday, April 10, from 1–4 p.m.

ABOUT FAULKES HERITAGE WOODS

Sisters Alice Smith and Elizabeth Barry, along with their nieces, Nancy and Cynthia Thompson, donated a portion of the land value of what is now known as Faulkes Heritage Woods to INHF in 1999. The habitat was named in honor of their grandmother and great-grandmother, Alice Faulkes. Sticking to the family's wishes of increasing awareness around conservation needs, INHF transferred the land to the City of Marion, ensuring it would become the beloved public park it is today — protected in perpetuity through an INHF conservation easement.

This 110-acre wildlife haven has not only provided refuge for woodland creatures and a favorite hiking destination for the Marion community, but has also served as an outdoor classroom for nearby colleges and schools focused on environmental education.

What to expect:

The Adult Literacy Center is celebrating 50 years of service to the community! Join 1000s of volunteers who, over the years, have invested 1-2 hours a week to meet one-to-one with an adult who needs to learn to read, write, and speak better. Become a part of the transformative learning experience as adults gain skills, confidence, and competence.

Adults enroll in the DMACC Adult Literacy Center to become more independent in the world of words, to get a better job, earn a high school diploma, and speak and understand English better. Volunteers meet with their assigned student at the DMACC Urban Campus or at an area library. 

No prior teaching experience is necessary. Come with a desire to learn and make a direct and personal investment in an adult learner's life (and in their family's life). You will receive information and materials to assist with tutoring your adult learner.

This opportunity involves preparing (or buying) and donating a well-balanced, child-friendly dinner. The meal needs to feed up to 20 people (mostly children). Food needs to be dropped off by 4:00 - 4:30 pm on the designated day. Meals are just dropped off; there is no serving involved. We do have the ability to heat/re-heat as needed. Stuff the Bus book drive is being held at Athene on Tuesday, May 12th from 11am to 1pm. Our goal is to collect 30,000 books for children from birth to middle school. (Our greatest need is for early childhood books -- birth to age 8.) Books are donated to childcare centers and child-serving programs in Dallas, Polk, and Warren counties to help us reach our goals in the area of Education Success.

Volunteers are needed at United Way after the book drive to assist in sorting books into pre-determined categories. By sorting the books on Wednesday, May 13th, it will make it easier for the community to navigate the room in a safe and efficient way ensuring they find the age appropriate books for the youth they serve during the distribution days. 

Volunteers will continued to be needed during distribution days (starting Thursday, May 14th) to help keep the room tidy and assist community members as they come in to pick up their books. The final shift on May 19th will be a clean-up shift.

Every pound of food you rescue is a meal for a family in need.

When grocery stores have surplus food, you help make sure it never goes to waste — and never goes far. As a Food Rescue Volunteer, you'll pick up donations from local retailers and bring them directly to the Bidwell Pantry, where families in our community are counting on what you carry through the door.

This is a great fit for someone who wants a consistent, active role with a tangible impact they can see every single week.

What you'll do: Meet at the Bidwell Pantry, then head out with a staff member or fellow volunteer to nearby grocery stores and retailers. You'll help load donated food into the vehicle, return to the pantry to unload and properly store items, and keep a quick record of what was collected. You're back at the pantry and done by 10:00 AM — a great way to make a real difference before your day gets started.

When we need you: Monday through Friday, 8:00–10:00 AM

Choose one day per week that works consistently with your schedule. Regular volunteers are especially valuable — stores get to know you, and the relationships you build make the work even smoother over time.

We are looking for dependable individuals to safely transport participants in a YWRC van from school/home to the YWRC for programs. We currently have openings for drivers on Tuesdays from 2:30 – 6:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 1:30 – 5:45 p.m. We are looking for volunteers who are able to make a long-term, weekly commitment.

An interview, background check, clean driving record, noncommercial Class D /chauffer’s license, and on the job training are required. Must be at least 25 years old.

Volunteers are needed to organize our donation area and do light cleaning in our shared living spaces (living room, dining room, and kitchen). ​Volunteers would be organizing clothing, personals/toiletries, feminine hygiene products, diapers, cleaning products, school supplies, food items, and much more. We provide basic necessities every month for up to the 77 families staying in New Directions Shelter, The Home Connection, and our other housing programs.​

​This is a great project for a single person to work on, or you can sign up to bring a group (up to 10 people at a time). Volunteers should be 12 and older. Youth 14 years of age and younger should have an adult on site with them while volunteering.

Our program team facilitates weekly programming and support groups where participants can learn, connect, and build community. During program, moms and their children share a meal together, strengthening relationships in a welcoming environment. Meals play a critical role in supporting participants who are experiencing food insecurity. You may choose to prepare a homemade meal, provide a premade option, or arrange delivery or catering.

In addition to a volunteer application, meal providers will be asked to complete a Civil Rights Training and brief food safety training, which can be completed online from the comfort of your home or office.

As a Childcare Volunteer, you’ll provide our Young Mom’s children with a safe space to play while their mom is learning parenting skills, financial literacy, what to expect in pregnancy and more.

We currently have openings for childcare volunteers every Monday from 5:45 – 7:30 p.m., some Tuesdays, and every Thursday from 5:15-7:00 p.m. Scheduling is flexible, a semester commitment is preferred. Volunteer Clinic Escorts help defend a person's right to choose and access vital services, education, and information as well as protect patients' physical safety and mental well-being. Escorts provide a protective barrier for patients and visitors entering the clinic, help keep the driveways and entrances clear for traffic safety, and maintain awareness of suspicious activity. Your main purpose as an Escort is to ensure that patients and visitors gain access to the clinic with the least amount of harassment, stress, confusion, and trauma as possible.

The Creator Collective is a volunteer opportunity for Planned Parenthood digital activists ages 18+ interested in social media content creation, photography, and videography. All skills levels welcome! This opportunity empowers volunteers to capture and share content for social media, our website, and foundation materials. This Lenten season, TIM’s CLUBe is launching a simple project with meaningful impact. We’re asking our residents to collect and donate their redeemable cans and bottles throughout the season. It’s a small, consistent way to practice discipline, work together, and give back.

We’re also inviting our community to join us. As you collect your redeemable cans and bottles during Lent, consider setting them aside for TIM’s CLUBe.

Momentum Art Studio Volunteer

Purpose

Support the day-to-day operations of Momentum Art Studio by helping maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for artists. Momentum Art Studio operates within Mainframe Studios and serves dozens of artists each week. As a studio volunteer, you’ll provide an extra set of hands to help the studio run smoothly while fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive space for creative expression. While basic art knowledge can be helpful, it is not required. What matters most is a willingness to support others, create a welcoming environment, and assist the Program Coordinator as needed.

Volunteers are expected to be adaptable and responsive to shifting studio needs, helping wherever support is most useful on a given day. Experience working with individuals with disabilities or mental health conditions is a plus. Compassion, patience, reliability, and a warm, respectful approach are essential.

This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity requiring approximately 2 hours per week or per month, depending on availability. Consistency is key. The studio is open Wednesday–Friday, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM, and volunteer schedules will be coordinated with staff based on availability and studio needs.

West Des Moines Human Services is seeking volunteers for its Anytime Food Program which distributes donated and rescued food items.  This opportunity is available weekdays from 7:45 am to 9:00 am at West Des Moines Human Services; currently, we need a volunteer on Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Fridays.  Volunteers help with food set-up, organization and distribution of the food items.  Distribution takes place outside, rain or shine. Volunteers are asked to commit to one shift per week.  Some lifting involved (up to 25 lbs). Please note, this position is open to volunteers who can help on an ongoing basis by committing to a regular weekly shift. The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman coordinates a volunteer ombudsman program, and we are actively seeking volunteers throughout the state of Iowa!  After completing initial certification training, a volunteer ombudsman in our program will make regular visits to an assigned long-term care facility or to multiple facilities in a region to help serve as a voice for residents, talking with them about their rights, empowering them, and providing advocacy.

Our volunteers are asked to spend a minimum of 3 hours per month in their assigned facility(ies), complete monthly reports, work with long-term care ombudsman staff at the local and state levels, and complete annual continuing education to remain certified. 

Visits to facilities are generally unannounced and can be made at any time, any day generally between the hours of 8am-8pm. For a volunteer who may wish to make an impact but not wish/be able to make visits to facilities, there are more administrative volunteer opportunities available on an individualized basis.

The Science Center of Iowa (SCI) is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help deliver positive and engaging customer experiences for our guests. In this role, you’ll serve as a friendly and knowledgeable source of information—greeting visitors at the door, guiding them through the check-in and ticketing process, and answering questions about SCI’s programs, exhibits, and events. Volunteers will assist guests throughout the building by providing directions, helping with lost children, and ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all. Do you want to make an impact on local youth and promote lifelong wellness all while playing basketball? Join us for our first annual club basketball clinic and tournament! Members from six clubs will be spending spring break perfecting their basketball skills before competing in our tournament. As a monthly market shopper, volunteers are responsible for shopping alongside clients, bagging groceries, and taking items out to client's cars. They may also assist with restocking shelves and preparing the pantry for opening and shift change. 

The Australia Exhibit Pond Clean Out
Every few years the Australia exhibit's pond needs a good clean outing. This involves moving mud and muck from the pond area with buckets/shovels, into a large dumpster. The more people we have the faster the work will go. This is a dirty job, you will get muddy, be sweating, and smell like pond muck. Volunteers will need to bring a pair of muck boots or waders. The Zoo will provide the rest of the tools/gloves and a place to wash boots.
At the end of the day, you will know you made the habitat better for the Zoo's Black swans and wallabies and native waterfowl.

Wayfinders assist patients, visitors, and colleagues with navigating through the hospital, providing information and directions

The 247-acre Cambridge Tract property is a key puzzle piece in the corridor of protection along the South Skunk River Greenbelt. The area consists of diverse bottomland timber, oxbow wetlands, river frontage, and restorable lands slated for prairie reconstructions. The area will eventually be open for public hunting and other activities, following the completion of the fundraising.

Make your way to the woods for a spring morning outdoors! Volunteers will hand-pull garlic mustard—one of Iowa’s most invasive plants—from Mathes’ woodlands. Garlic mustard spreads rapidly and displaces native plants and wildflowers, causing serious damage to wooded landscapes if left unchecked. We’ll start the morning pulling garlic mustard and wrap up with a moderately difficult hike while keeping an eye out for spring ephemerals.

About Mathes

The Mathes Property encompasses 51 acres with rolling hills of oak/hickory savanna, woodland and a plethora of spring ephemeral wildflowers. The property sits atop a ridge just before dropping into the South Skunk River floodplain north of the property. This natural area sits just a few miles outside the town of Pella and is a refuge for wildlife, including deer, turkey, owls and a number of birds. Mathes came to INHF through a bequest from former landowner, Harold Mathes, in 2010. It is now owned and stewarded by INHF.

From Pella, head north on Main St. about 1.5 miles. Turn right onto 228th Pl. until the stop sign. Turn left onto 240th Pl. to the first gravel road. Turn left on Dakota Dr. and look for INHF signs.

We're looking for groups of 10+ volunteers to help us increase the tree canopy in low equity neighborhoods around Des Moines. Adding trees to a community has a ton of benefits, including an increase in physical and mental health!

The Meals on Wheels Hydroponic Farm is a 3,000 square foot indoor farm capable of producing 20,000 pounds of leafy greens a year. Our farm provides some of our most at risk populations in the metro a source of fresh, healthy greens year-round. We also provide greens to other WesleyLife and local communities.

Packaging with Meals from the Heartland!

Volunteers play a hands-on role in the fight against hunger by working together to assemble nutritious meals during a two-hour shift. You’ll work alongside fellow volunteers and our staff at stations to fill, weigh, seal, and box meals. Each packager helps create about 540 meals- enough to feed two children for a full year! This impactful work supports Meals from the Heartland’s mission to fight hunger both locally and globally. Together in 2026, we’re aiming to assemble 23.3 million meals, and your time and teamwork help make that goal possible.

Board members will often support the Parks and Recreation department via arranging sponsorships or simply volunteering their time.

Growing Awareness and Membership for the Friends - The Friends of WDM Parks and Rec organization has a big dream to make the West Des Moines Parks system the best it can be. Growing awareness of the Friends and its mission, and finding ways to add new ‘Friends’ as members is a frequent goal and task.

Identifying Funding Sources and Seeking Contributions - Each board member also helps identify potential funding sources for Friends of WDM Parks & Rec. Your knowledge of the community and connections will support the development of a robust financial support program. Many of our residents face financial barriers or don’t have family to celebrate with, and this is a meaningful way to show them they are valued! To host a Birthday Bash, you can either provide 80 pieces of cake or cupcakes or make a $60 contribution for us to purchase the cake. You’re also welcome to bring party decorations to help make it feel festive. Upon arrival, you and a group of up to five can help decorate, serve cake, and connect with residents. Bingo and Trivia is a great way to directly connect with our residents and our cause! Often times, an individual or small group will host the bingo night and bring in between 8 – 10 small prizes (ranging in the 5-10 dollar range) and one prize for the blackout round (around the 20 dollar price point). We will provide the bingo set and even bake up some delicious cookies for your bingo night! Popular prizes are things like towel sets, household cleaning items, pots and pans or décor items that residents can use to personalize their apartments!

Create joyful bags full of fun/delicious goodies! Treats, soaps, lotions, chap stick, pens, socks etc. Get creative and decorate the bags or even include a handwritten note on or in the bag to let our folks know that you are wishing them well! If you would like to ensure that all residents receive a kindness bag - please plan on making 140 bags.

Create Change with Clean Clothing:

Clean clothing is a basic human need. While we have on-site laundry, many residents can’t afford the quarters needed for a wash and dry. One load costs 12 quarters. Our goal is for every resident to have access to a laundry kit (12 quarters, a pod, and a dryer sheet) when needed. Consider hosting a spare change drive at work, with friends, or through a school or sports team.

Fill Our Pantry:

Gather friends, neighbors, or coworkers to host a food, clothing, or hygiene drive for our 140 residents. For current needs, visit our Amazon wish list.

Set a New Resident Up for Success:

When residents move in, they receive a welcome basket with essential household items. We’re currently running low and would appreciate donations of basic kitchen, bathroom, and cleaning supplies to help make their first day feel like home.

Volunteering at the DMARC-Ket Food Pantry is just like helping a friend shop for groceries! As a food pantry volunteer, you will assist visitors in selecting their food items after they have gone through the intake process. DMARC is the local recipient of the Stamp Out Hunger® food drive in Greater Des Moines. In 2025, over 19,000 pounds of food were contributed through Stamp Out Hunger®. DMARC is recruiting volunteers to assist with sorting, quality-checking, counting, and packaging thousands of pounds of donated food items to distribute through our Food Pantry Network. Friends, families, and colleague groups are encouraged to volunteer together; children and youth are welcome!

The Corporate Leadership Cabinet is a network of community-minded business leaders who support DMARC through strategic partnerships, resource sharing, and community engagement. Members act as ambassadors within their sectors to raise awareness of DMARC’s mission, contribute financially or in-kind, and help open doors to new opportunities.

Everybody Wins! Iowa (EWI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring children’s success in school and life through weekly one-to-one read-aloud experiences with caring adults.

EWI is seeking Board Members who will serve a minimum three (3) year term and assist EWI to achieve its mission to increase children’s success in school and in life through reading and mentoring experiences with caring volunteers. Terms are eligible for renewal to a maximum of three (3) consecutive terms. The Board meets every other month (July, September, November, January, March, and May) on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 PM. All Board Members are expected to participate in Committee activities and attend Committee meetings. Current committees include Marketing, Recruitment, and Special Events. In 2002, when Everybody Wins! Iowa was initially launched, our Power Read program served just 15 students in 3 Des Moines schools. PRL volunteers will support one school to start, but more can be added depending on your availability. Most schools will need approximately 90 minutes of support each week. Community Youth Concepts (CYC) hosts a Community Fridge at our building at 1446 MLK Jr. Parkway (Corner of MLK and Clark) to provide food and toiletries for those in need and to reduce food waste in our community.  With the refrigerator and extra shelf space we are able to accept both fresh and shelf stable items.   In addition, prepared food can also be left as long as it is in either individual or family size containers (could be zip lock bags, sealable takout containers, etc. (please, no large buffet or other serving size containers)) and labled with what it is and the date prepared.

The statewide Pi515 AI Challenge offers students ages 18-24 an opportunity to tackle real-world social and economic issues in Iowa using Multi-Modal AI and big data. Teams of 3-5 students will design innovative and scalable solutions that address challenges in agriculture, finance, cybersecurity, and education. This program runs February-April 2026 and culminates with a public pitch competition, where top teams present their ideas for the chance to win awards funds to further develop their project.
